A good person's material for work is their governing reason, as a physician works on bodies and a farmer on land.
A paraphrase of a teaching associated with Epictetus, written for modern readers. Not a transcription of a copyrighted edition.
Every craft has something it shapes. A cook works with ingredients, a carpenter with wood, and a musician with sound. The Stoics say that our primary material is the faculty that chooses: our attention, judgment, and intention. That material is available in every circumstance. A frustrating meeting, a delayed train, and an unexpected bill all offer the same workshop. You may not control the conditions, but you can examine the story you are telling yourself and decide what response deserves your support. This is not instant mastery. Skill grows through small repetitions, including mistakes honestly reviewed. Today, treat one irritation as practice instead of proof that the day is ruined. Notice the impulse to complain, blame, or rush. Then choose a response you could respect afterward. Training your mind is not separate from daily life; daily life is where the training happens.
