Epictetus Enchiridion

Epictetus: If you have assumed any character above your…

If you have assumed any character above your strength, you have both made an ill figure in that and quitted one which you might have supported.

The passage follows a public-domain translation of the Enchiridion. The reading beside it is ours.

Ambition becomes trouble when it asks you to perform a role you cannot honestly sustain. You take on every project, imitate a lifestyle beyond your means, promise more availability than you have, or claim expertise you have not earned. The result is not just exhaustion; it can make you abandon the useful responsibilities you were actually equipped to carry. Epictetus is not advising you to stay small forever. Growth requires stretching. But a stretch is different from a costume. Choose challenges that develop your capacity rather than merely display an image of capacity. Be honest about your current limits: time, money, health, experience, and attention. Then do the work of expanding them gradually. You do not need to be the most impressive person in the room. You need to be dependable in the role that is really yours, while preparing carefully for the next one.
