Life resembles a campaign: one person keeps watch, another scouts, another stands in the front line. Each life is a long and varied service. Keep your post and carry out what is required of you.
A paraphrase of a teaching associated with Epictetus, written for modern readers. Not a transcription of a copyrighted edition.
Many parts of life ask for the discipline of a long assignment rather than the excitement of a single victory. Caring for a family member, learning a craft, recovering your health, or doing dependable work can feel repetitive because it is repetitive. The point is not to dramatize every day as a crisis. It is to recognize that endurance matters. A person who keeps promises, prepares before problems arise, and stays useful during an unglamorous stretch is practicing real strength. Think about the post you occupy now. It may be at home, in a classroom, on a team, or in a job no one notices much. What does that post require: attention, courage, restraint, honesty, or patience? Bring those qualities to it today. You cannot choose every assignment, but you can choose whether you meet it with alertness and a sense of duty.
