Epictetus Stoic teachings

Epictetus: We do not give up our efforts merely because…

We do not give up our efforts merely because perfect mastery is beyond us.

A paraphrase of a teaching associated with Epictetus, written for modern readers. Not a transcription of a copyrighted edition.

Perfectionism disguises itself as high standards, but it often produces avoidance. If a workout cannot be ideal, we skip it. If the report cannot be brilliant, we delay it. If we cannot solve a relationship completely, we say nothing. Human improvement does not work that way. Most worthwhile skills are built through uneven repetitions, corrections, and partial successes. You do not need certainty that you will become excellent before taking the next useful step. Today, choose one area where the gap between your current ability and your desired ability has discouraged you. Reduce the assignment. Read ten pages, take a short walk, practice one phrase, or make the appointment. Then count the effort honestly rather than dismissing it because it was incomplete. Progress is not impressive every day, but it is real when it is repeated. Let the imperfect attempt be evidence that you have not abandoned yourself.
