Marcus Aurelius: As a physician's prescription aims at…

As a physician's prescription aims at healing, so nature may prescribe illness, disability, or hardship for the work of one's destiny.

A paraphrase of a teaching associated with Marcus Aurelius, written for modern readers. Not a transcription of a copyrighted edition.

We readily endure inconvenience when we believe it serves recovery. A rehabilitation routine can be tedious, and a difficult treatment can be unpleasant, yet we follow it because we see its purpose. Marcus invites us to apply a similar posture to setbacks that arrive without our consent. This does not mean every hardship is secretly desirable or that suffering should be romanticized. It means adversity can become material for courage, patience, skill, and compassion if we work with it. A missed opportunity may teach you to prepare better. A limitation may reveal a neglected relationship or a new way to contribute. Ask not only, “Why did this happen?” but also, “What capacity can I build here?” Today, face one unwelcome condition as training rather than an insult. Take the next reasonable step, and allow the experience to strengthen rather than merely embitter you.
