Marcus Aurelius Stoic teachings
Marcus Aurelius: Do not be ashamed to need assistance.…
Do not be ashamed to need assistance. You have a duty like a soldier at the wall; if you are hurt and cannot climb without another's aid, let them help you.
A paraphrase of a teaching associated with Marcus Aurelius, written for modern readers. Not a transcription of a copyrighted edition.
Independence is valuable, but treating every need as a personal failure makes life harder than it must be. No one learns, heals, raises children, or survives serious trouble entirely alone. Asking for help can be an act of responsibility when the task affects others and your resources are not enough. Be specific. Instead of saying that everything is falling apart, tell a friend you need a ride, ask a colleague to review the document, or speak to a professional about the problem you have been carrying. Accepting assistance also gives other people the chance to practice generosity and competence. You can still do your part; help is not the same as surrendering your agency. Today, identify one burden that has become heavier because you insist on carrying it privately. Reach out to an appropriate person with a clear request. Courage sometimes sounds like, ‘I cannot manage this alone.’
