Marcus Aurelius Stoic teachings
Marcus Aurelius: How does your ruling mind govern…
How does your ruling mind govern itself? Everything else, whether chosen or not, is merely smoke and a lifeless thing beside it.
A paraphrase of a teaching associated with Marcus Aurelius, written for modern readers. Not a transcription of a copyrighted edition.
Your behavior is shaped by more than your declared intentions. Hunger, fatigue, old habits, fear, social pressure, and surroundings can all influence the judgment you call your own. This is not a reason to give up responsibility; it is a reason to understand the conditions under which you make choices. Notice when you are most reactive. Do you become impatient late in the day? Do you agree too quickly in certain groups? Do you make poor decisions when you have skipped rest or meals? Today, adjust one condition before asking willpower to do all the work. Take a break, prepare for a difficult conversation, remove a distraction, or delay a decision until you are calmer. Caring for the mind includes caring for what quietly steers it.
