Marcus Aurelius Meditations
Marcus Aurelius: I have often wondered how it should…
I have often wondered how it should come to pass, that every man loving himself best, should more regard other men's opinions concerning himself than his own. For if any God or grave master standing by, should command any of us to think nothing by himself but what he should presently speak out; no man were able to endure it, though but for one day.
The passage follows a public-domain translation of Meditations. The reading beside it is ours.
We often know our own private thoughts better than anyone, yet we give strangers' opinions more authority over us. Marcus imagines being forced to speak every thought aloud for one day. Most of us would be horrified—not because every thought is true, but because the gap between our inner life and public image is real. This is not a call to confess every passing impulse. It is a call to stop treating outside approval as more trustworthy than honest self-examination. What do you actually think about the way you are living? What would you say if applause, criticism, and reputation were removed from the calculation? Spend less time managing impressions and more time making your inner and outer life compatible. Today, catch one choice you are making mainly for appearance. Ask whether you would still make it if no one could see.
