If it be not fitting, do it not. If it be not true, speak it not. Ever maintain thine own purpose and resolution free from all compulsion and necessity.
The passage follows a public-domain translation of Meditations. The reading beside it is ours.
A great deal of trouble begins with small betrayals of our own judgment. We send the cutting message because we are angry. We repeat a rumor because it is entertaining. We agree to something we know is wrong because saying no feels uncomfortable. Marcus offers a clean test: if it is not right, do not do it; if it is not true, do not say it. That simplicity is powerful because it removes the endless negotiations we have with ourselves. You do not need a complicated defense for acting with integrity. You need the courage to let your principles decide before pressure, fear, ambition, or applause get involved. Your freedom is protected by these boundaries. Today, notice one moment when it would be easier to bend the truth or abandon your standards. Choose the action you can respect when the room is empty.
