Marcus Aurelius Meditations
Marcus Aurelius: Make it not any longer a matter of…
Make it not any longer a matter of dispute or discourse, what are the signs and proprieties of a good man, but really and actually to be such.
The passage follows a public-domain translation of Meditations. The reading beside it is ours.
We can spend a lifetime discussing what a good person would do and very little time doing it. We listen to podcasts, save quotations, debate values, and build an identity around caring about wisdom. None of that is useless. But it becomes a shelter from the harder work if it never reaches behavior. The test of philosophy is embarrassingly ordinary: Are you more honest when it costs you? More patient in the checkout line? Less cruel when you have an audience? More reliable when no one is checking? Marcus does not ask for a perfect definition of virtue. He asks for practice. You do not need another theory before you make the apology, complete the task, or stop repeating the complaint. Today, choose one quality you admire and give it a concrete form. Make goodness a verb before you make it a topic.
