My reasoned choice is independent of my neighbor’s, as of their body or breath. Though made for cooperation, each ruling mind governs its own affairs.

Living with other people requires both connection and boundaries. You can care deeply about a friend, colleague, or relative without taking ownership of every decision they make. Their opinions, habits, and moods may affect the atmosphere around you, but they do not have to determine your character. Focus on the part that is truly yours: speak honestly, keep your agreements, avoid imposing needless harm, and choose your response. Then allow others the same moral space. This is especially useful when disagreement becomes personal. You do not need to make another person think as you do in order to treat them decently. Nor do you need their approval to live responsibly. Cooperation is not control. Today, notice where you are trying to manage someone else’s inner life. Release that impossible job and return to your own judgment, where meaningful work can actually be done.
