Marcus Aurelius: Nothing can block the purposes of your…
Nothing can block the purposes of your mind. Fire, weapons, rulers, insults, and every other threat leave it untouched.
A paraphrase of a teaching associated with Marcus Aurelius, written for modern readers. Not a transcription of a copyrighted edition.
Events can close doors, alter plans, and take away comforts you expected to keep. They cannot force you to surrender judgment, kindness, or the ability to choose a response. When a plan falls apart, avoid treating the first route as the only route. Ask what remains available: a lesson to learn, a person to support, a smaller task to finish, or a better way to begin again. A missed deadline can become a chance to communicate honestly. A rejection can reveal where preparation is needed. A difficult diagnosis may make patience and presence more important than achievement. This is not denial of pain or injustice. It is a refusal to let hardship dictate your whole character. Today, prepare for disruptions by remembering that your agency is portable. Wherever circumstances place you, you can still decide what kind of mind you bring.
