Marcus Aurelius Meditations

Marcus Aurelius: Receive temporal blessings without…

Receive temporal blessings without ostentation, when they are sent and thou shalt be able to part with them with all readiness and facility when they are taken from thee again.

The passage follows a public-domain translation of Meditations. The reading beside it is ours.

Enjoy what arrives, but do not grip it so tightly that its departure takes you with it. A promotion, a healthy season, a good relationship, a beautiful home, even a quiet afternoon—these are gifts, not possessions we can secure forever. We make ourselves miserable when we turn a temporary blessing into a guarantee. The Stoic alternative is neither coldness nor indifference. It is appreciation without entitlement. You can celebrate the raise without making your identity depend on the salary. You can love someone deeply without pretending either of you is exempt from change. This kind of gratitude makes joy more available, not less, because it meets life as it is. Notice one good thing today and receive it fully. Then remind yourself gently: I am lucky to have this, and I can survive when it changes.
