Marcus Aurelius Stoic teachings

Marcus Aurelius: Revere your power of understanding: it…

Revere your power of understanding: it keeps the ruling mind from admitting what conflicts with nature, reason, care for others, and the divine order.

A paraphrase of a teaching associated with Marcus Aurelius, written for modern readers. Not a transcription of a copyrighted edition.

Your ability to think is not merely a tool for winning arguments or solving private problems. It allows you to pause, consider consequences, recognize another person's humanity, and choose a response that improves a situation. That capacity carries responsibility. You can use it to justify impatience, or to notice that someone is struggling. You can use it to rationalize a selfish choice, or to find a fairer one. Today, before a decision that affects another person, give your reasoning a fuller job. Ask not only, “What do I want?” but also, “What is true here? What is fair? What effect will this have?” Clear thinking joined to goodwill is a powerful form of character. Treat it as something worth exercising carefully, especially in small situations.
