Marcus Aurelius Meditations
Marcus Aurelius: Such as thy thoughts and ordinary…
Such as thy thoughts and ordinary cogitations are, such will thy mind be in time. For the soul doth as it were receive its tincture from the fancies, and imaginations. Dye it therefore and thoroughly soak it with the assiduity of these cogitations.
The passage follows a public-domain translation of Meditations. The reading beside it is ours.
Your repeated thoughts shape the person you become. If you rehearse grievances all day, you train your mind toward bitterness. If you feed it envy through social media, it learns to measure life by comparison. If you return to courage, gratitude, and responsibility, those become easier to access when pressure comes.
This is not positive thinking in the shallow sense. You do not have to deny problems or repeat slogans. You do have to notice what you are practicing mentally. Every time you tell yourself, I always fail, nobody respects me, or this is hopeless, you strengthen a habit of interpretation.
Choose better material. Keep reminders of what matters. Read things that enlarge you. Before a hard conversation, rehearse patience rather than victory. Before sleep, review what went well and what you can improve. Today, protect your attention as carefully as you protect your diet. Your mind absorbs whatever you repeatedly serve it.
