The universe is transformation; our life is shaped by judgment.
A paraphrase of a teaching associated with Marcus Aurelius, written for modern readers. Not a transcription of a copyrighted edition.
Nothing around us holds still for long. Bodies age, workplaces evolve, friendships deepen or fade, and plans are rewritten. We may wish that a person, institution, or version of ourselves could remain exactly as it was, but that wish cannot stop change. What we can examine is the judgment attached to it. When a familiar routine ends, do we automatically call it ruin? When our view of someone changes, do we insist on an outdated story? Our minds often create suffering by demanding permanence from changing things. A better practice is to update our understanding with honesty. Notice what has actually changed, what still matters, and what response is now appropriate. Today, let one old assumption be revised. You need not abandon your values to meet a moving world; you simply need to stop treating yesterday's picture as the final truth.
