Marcus Aurelius Meditations

Marcus Aurelius: There is nothing more shameful than…

There is nothing more shameful than perfidious friendship. Above all things, that must be avoided. However true goodness, simplicity, and kindness cannot so be hidden, but that as we have already said in the very eyes and countenance they will show themselves.

The passage follows a public-domain translation of Meditations. The reading beside it is ours.

A friendship built on hidden competition, flattery, or private betrayal is worse than open conflict. At least an enemy announces the danger. Marcus warns us to avoid being that kind of friend ourselves. Reliability is not glamorous, but it is rare: keeping confidences, telling the truth kindly, refusing to use someone's vulnerability as social currency. Character eventually becomes visible. You can hide a bad mood for an evening, but not a pattern of manipulation or meanness. Likewise, genuine goodness shows up in the face, voice, and habits long before people can explain why they trust you. Do not focus too much on detecting false friends; that can become paranoia. Focus first on becoming safe for others. Today, honor a promise, speak well of someone who is absent, or give a friend the honest answer they need rather than the easy one.
