Marcus Aurelius Stoic teachings

Marcus Aurelius: Walk through the succession of past…

Walk through the succession of past kingdoms; look ahead and you will see the same pattern. Whether forty years or an age, what else is there?

A paraphrase of a teaching associated with Marcus Aurelius, written for modern readers. Not a transcription of a copyrighted edition.

History can make our urgent concerns look both smaller and clearer. Institutions rise, fashions change, admired names fade, and each generation discovers that it is subject to many of the same hopes and fears as the last. This is not meant to flatten life into meaninglessness. It can free us from the fantasy that our particular moment must last forever or that we alone face uncertainty. Your career, reputation, and current crisis belong to a moving pattern much larger than you. Let that perspective soften panic. What remains worth doing is still close at hand: act justly, care for the people near you, and use your brief role well. Today, step back from any issue that feels totalizing. Ask how much of it will matter in five years, or after you have had a night’s rest. Then give it the amount of attention it deserves.
