Marcus Aurelius Stoic teachings
Marcus Aurelius: You will sooner find earth separated…
You will sooner find earth separated from the ground than a human being wholly apart from other people.
A paraphrase of a teaching associated with Marcus Aurelius, written for modern readers. Not a transcription of a copyrighted edition.
Independence is valuable, but self-sufficiency has limits. We rely on other people for food, knowledge, care, work, and perspective, even when we prefer to be left alone. A difficult week can tempt us to withdraw: stop replying, avoid asking for help, decide that nobody understands. That response may feel protective, yet it usually makes the burden heavier. Human life works better through mutual contribution. You can offer a useful introduction, listen without trying to fix everything, or bring patience to a tense conversation. You can also let someone support you when you need it. Neither act makes you weak. Today, notice one place where you have treated connection as optional. Send the message, thank the person, or accept the help. Participation in a community is not a distraction from a good life; it is part of it.
