Musonius Rufus: Philosophy is not a matter of…
Philosophy is not a matter of appearance; it is attentiveness to what matters and faithful care for it.

It is tempting to turn every commitment into an identity badge. We can buy the right notebook, repeat the right vocabulary, or cultivate a look that suggests seriousness. None of that tells us much about how we behave when nobody is watching. A person devoted to wisdom may be easy to miss in a crowd. Look instead for someone who listens before reacting, keeps promises that are inconvenient, and treats a less powerful person with the same respect given to a superior. Those are the visible effects of an inward practice. This is freeing, because you do not need to perform a role today. You do not need to look disciplined, calm, or enlightened. Choose one responsibility that has been neglected, give it your full attention, and handle it well. Your conduct will explain your values more clearly than any label could.
