Seneca Stoic teachings

Seneca: I do not praise those who rush into life's…

I do not praise those who rush into life's torrent and wrestle daily with hardship by choice. A wise person can endure turmoil when necessary, but chooses peace rather than conflict.

A paraphrase of a teaching associated with Seneca, written for modern readers. Not a transcription of a copyrighted edition.

Busyness can become an identity. We may fill every open hour, create emergencies, or seek difficult projects because stillness makes us uncomfortable. Yet not every demanding path is noble, and not every quiet choice is retreat. There is a difference between accepting a burden that duty requires and repeatedly choosing turmoil for the thrill, praise, or distraction it provides. Ask what your current struggle is for. Does it protect something important, develop a needed skill, or serve people who rely on you? Or has it become a way to avoid rest, relationships, or an honest look at yourself? Peace is not passivity. It can mean setting a boundary, declining an unnecessary fight, or leaving space in the day to think. Today, look at one source of needless friction. Consider whether courage there means charging ahead, or calmly choosing a less dramatic and more sustainable course.
