Seneca Moral essays

Seneca: You ask, what this post is? it is that of being…

You ask, what this post is? it is that of being a man. The wise man has another help, of the opposite kind to this; you are hard at work, while he has already won the victory.

The passage follows a public-domain translation of Seneca’s moral essays. The reading beside it is ours.

The highest position is not a title or a seat above other people. It is the difficult post of being fully human: responsible for your choices, capable of reason, and able to act with fairness under pressure. That work is never finished. We may envy people who seem to have already “won”—the successful colleague, the calm mentor, the financially secure friend. But their external victory does not relieve us of our own assignment. Your life asks for your attention, not comparison. Being a person of character means meeting ordinary duties well: answering honestly, showing up on time, caring for your body, apologizing without excuses, and using power carefully. These actions rarely look heroic from the outside, yet they are the ground of a good life. Today, stop waiting for a more impressive role to begin acting well. The role you already have is enough material for courage, discipline, and kindness.
