Marcus Aurelius Meditations
Marcus Aurelius: Begin yet higher, even from this: if…
Begin yet higher, even from this: if atoms be not the beginning of all things, than which to believe nothing can be more absurd, then must we needs grant that there is a nature, that doth govern the universe. If such a nature, then are all worse things made for the better's sake; and all better for one another's sake.
The passage follows a public-domain translation of Meditations. The reading beside it is ours.
Marcus holds a strong view: the universe is ordered, and every part has some relation to the whole. You do not have to share every metaphysical assumption to use the practical lesson. We are rarely the sole point of a situation. The inconvenience that disrupts your plan may serve a larger system; the sacrifice you make may support people you cannot see. This perspective does not excuse injustice or tell us to passively accept preventable harm. It asks us to resist the childish belief that everything should be arranged around our preference. We are connected, and better things exist partly for the sake of one another. In a family, team, or community, ask not only, What do I get? Ask, What does this role require of me? That shift turns resentment into contribution.
