Marcus Aurelius Meditations
Marcus Aurelius: Ever consider and think upon the world…
Ever consider and think upon the world as being but one living substance, and having but one soul, and how all things in the world, are terminated into one sensitive power; and are done by one general motion as it were, and deliberation of that one soul; and how all things that are, concur in the cause of one another's being, and by what manner of connection and concatenation all things happen.
The passage follows a public-domain translation of Meditations. The reading beside it is ours.
We are inclined to experience life as a private drama: my deadline, my disappointment, my success. Marcus asks us to zoom out. We belong to one interconnected system, where causes ripple outward and every person is both affected by and affecting everyone else.
That perspective changes ordinary choices. The impatient email you send changes someone else's day. The kindness you offer a stranger may travel farther than you know. A supply delay, a storm, a layoff, and a family argument all come from chains of events larger than any single person can see. That is not a reason to become passive. It is a reason to act with more care and less self-importance.
You are not the center of the whole story, but you are part of it. Today, remember the connections behind what you consume, say, and do. Let that make you more patient, useful, and humane.
