Marcus Aurelius Meditations
Marcus Aurelius: It is most needful that thou shouldst…
It is most needful that thou shouldst always remember this. For so shalt thou be far more gentle and moderate towards all men.
The passage follows a public-domain translation of Meditations. The reading beside it is ours.
Gentleness is easier when you remember how limited everyone’s perspective is—including your own. The driver who cuts you off may be distracted by bad news. The colleague who is abrupt may be overwhelmed. The family member who repeats a tired complaint may be carrying a fear they cannot name. We do not have to excuse bad behavior or allow people to mistreat us. But we can stop assuming that every irritation is a personal attack. Marcus repeatedly returns to this mental reminder because it changes the temperature of an encounter. A little humility creates room for patience. Instead of immediately labeling someone selfish, stupid, or impossible, ask what else could be true. That question does not make you naïve; it makes you less reactive. Today, when someone tests your patience, pause before writing the full story about their motives. Choose the response that you will still respect after your anger has passed.
