Marcus Aurelius Stoic teachings

Marcus Aurelius: Tell yourself: you are no longer to be…

Tell yourself: you are no longer to be ruled like a slave by every urge. Do not be jerked about by each impulse; stop protesting the present and stop fearing what has not arrived.

A paraphrase of a teaching associated with Marcus Aurelius, written for modern readers. Not a transcription of a copyrighted edition.

We often speak as though our reactions are unavoidable: I had to check my phone, I had to say something, I could not stop worrying. Yet a feeling can be present without becoming our manager. The urge to snack, scroll, argue, or catastrophize may be loud, but it does not carry authority on its own. Independence begins in the narrow space between an impulse and an action. Notice the pull, name it plainly, and wait long enough to decide what you actually want to do. You may still choose the cookie, the reply, or the difficult conversation. The difference is that it becomes a choice rather than a reflex. The same applies to disappointment about today and dread about tomorrow. Neither needs to dictate your next move. Choose one moment today to pause before obeying yourself. That pause is proof that your character is still in your hands.
