The soul is shaped by the thoughts it repeatedly entertains, since such ideas give it its color.
A paraphrase of a teaching associated with Marcus Aurelius, written for modern readers. Not a transcription of a copyrighted edition.
Your mind learns from repetition. The complaints you rehearse, the insults you revisit, and the fears you refresh become familiar routes for attention. Eventually, they can feel like an accurate picture of the world even when they are only a practiced habit. The same process can serve you better. Spend time with questions that enlarge you: What can I do next? What is still good here? What would a fair response look like? This does not require pretending that trouble is pleasant. It means refusing to make trouble the only thing you see. Choose what you read, discuss, and dwell on with some care. If you begin the day with outrage and end it replaying disappointments, that pattern leaves a mark. Give your inner life better material, and your judgments will gradually become steadier, more generous, and more useful.
