Marcus Aurelius Meditations

Marcus Aurelius: Within a while the earth shall cover us…

Within a while the earth shall cover us all, and then she herself shall have her change. And then the course will be, from one period of eternity unto another, and so a perpetual eternity.

The passage follows a public-domain translation of Meditations. The reading beside it is ours.

The earth will eventually take back every title, possession, conflict, and body we are so busy protecting. Even the earth itself is changing. Marcus uses this vast perspective not to make our lives meaningless, but to make our vanities proportionate. The argument you need to win, the image you need to maintain, the object you need to own—will any of it deserve this much anxiety from a longer view? Mortality can be clarifying. It reminds us that the only durable claim we make is through the quality of our actions while we are here. You do not need to solve eternity. You need to use Tuesday well. Say what should be said. Do not postpone affection. Avoid the petty fight. Complete the honest work in front of you. The future will continue changing without your permission. Let that be a reason to be present, not a reason to withdraw.
